LOVELL — Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library has free events for both kids and adults scheduled for August.
Free gardening camp for kids 5 to 8 will be held Aug. 15-19. A canning workshop will be held on Thursday, Aug. 18. Both are at the library, 227 Main St.
The canning workshop, hosting by a representative from University of Maine Cooperative Extension, will be held at 6:30 p.m. Participants will learn the basic steps for canning, the latest and safest recipes, tips for what equipment to use to insure safety, and how to check for properly sealed jars.
Children’s Garden Camp will take place 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday, Aug. 15 to Friday, Aug. 19, for ages 5 to 8. Gardening opens a whole new world to children. They take an interest in the wonder of living things, the earth and their community. Studies show that kids who work in outdoor gardens get higher scores on science tests and make healthier choices at mealtimes. The free program will help kids learn about the parts of plants, plant life cycles and composting with hands-on activities, songs and literature. They’ll get to harvest, prepare and eat vegetables grown on site in the library’s raised beds. While the camp is free, space is limited, so registration is required. Children must bring a packed lunch, water bottle, sunblock, bug repellent and hat.
Program leader is Lara Preece, who has been teaching young children for more than 15 years and has a background in environmental education. She has maintained and facilitated school garden programs and was awarded Outstanding Environmental Educator by Tin Mountain Conservation Center in 2017.
