LEWISTON – USM L/A Senior College is looking for volunteers who are comfortable with technology to host Zoom classes for the September 2022-May 2023 semesters.
The Zoom classes help homebound seniors access LASC’s offerings.
There are two types of Zoom classes needing hosts:
1. Hybrid – The instructor, some students, and the host meet in a classroom at USM LAC. Other students will be present on Zoom. The host will set up a computer and auxiliary equipment owned by Senior College in the classroom to enable homebound students to interact with the class.
2. Zoom only – The host, using their own computer at home, will act as host for a class where the instructor and all students are on Zoom.
There will be training sessions for each type of host after Aug. 5., and there will be backup help for the first few classes.
In addition to the satisfaction of helping homebound seniors remain part of Senior College, as well as the satisfaction of learning new skills, each host will be entitled to one tuition-free class of their choice. (Hosts are not charged a fee for any class that they host.)
Many seniors have benefited from the Zoom classes during the pandemic. Some wish to return to in-person classes, some feel taking a class from home better suits their needs. LASC wants to make it possible for all to enjoy our classes. With the help of host volunteers, it has been done with success so far, but we need more help.
Those interested in hosting should let LASC know immediately. Plans are underway for the fall semester. For more information, email laseniorcollege@gmail.com or call 207-753-6610 and leave a message. LASC is a volunteer-run organization, so it may take a few days to return messages.
