CANTON — A celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Clean Water Act will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 31, at several locations in town.
The Clean Water Act is one of the first and most influential modern U.S. environmental law. Sponsored by Rumford native U.S. Sen. Ed Muskie, D-Maine, its aim was to restore and maintain the integrity of the nation’s waterways and water bodies.
The celebration, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 10 a.m. at the town boat launch, 7 Staples Hill Road, with a kayak and canoe outing on Lake Anasagunticook. Those participating should bring their own kayak or canoe and life vest. Some kayaks are available for use – email anasagunticook@gmail.com to inquire. The 90-minute paddle will include a water testing demonstration by certified lake steward Tom Hamilton and a visual tour of several erosion control projects, by Jeff Stern of the Androscoggin River Watershed Council.
The paddle will be followed by a noon lunch at the Canton Historical Society, 25 Turner St., sponsored by Patriot Renewables, and free of charge to the public. The historical society will host a special exhibit and the Country Store Gift Shop, at the same address, will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will feature a Clean Water Act commemorative postcard for sale.
The day will wrap up at 2 p.m. with a tour of the Canton Wind Farm on Canton Mountain.
While the events are free, registration is encouraged at androscogginwatershed.org/event-4807518, although walk-ups are welcome.
Hosting the event is the Canton Historical Society, the Lake Anasagunticook Association and the Androscoggin River Watershed Council. Patriot Renewables, LLC, the company that built the wind farm on Canton Mountain, is also a participant.
