AUGUSTA – Tree City USA awards were presented to 20 Maine municipalities in May by the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry’s Project Canopy community forestry program.
Tree City USA Awards are earned for commitment to effective urban forest management.
Tree City USA communities must maintain a tree board or department; have a community tree care ordinance; invest at least $2 per capita in urban forestry; celebrate Arbor Day. The awards were presented May 17, during Arbor Week, in a ceremony at the Viles Arboretum.
Farmington is among three communities that have marked 45 years as Tree City recipients this year. The other two are Kennebunkport and Westbrook.
Other Turner Publishing area communities on the list are Brunswick (five years), Auburn (19 years), Lewiston (19 years), Hallowell (20 years), Bath (25 years).
Project Canopy encourages communities to develop project proposals that support sustainable community forestry management, increase awareness of the benefits of trees and forests, and increase the health and livability of communities through sound tree planting and maintenance.
In addition, Colby College was recognized with a Tree Campus USA award; Bombadil Tree Farm, of Ashland, was presented the 2022 Outstanding Tree Farm of the Year award; and Hancock County Tree Farm of the Year – went to Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust.
