TURNER — The North Turner Cemetery Association will meet at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 19, at the cemetery (weather permitting) on Howes Corner Road. The association welcomes anyone who is interested, and is seeking more members.
Those attending should bring a chair. An alternate meeting place will be 38 Quimby Road. Those who are COVID-19 compromised are advised to wear a mask.
The association was organized in 1899. Copies of amended by-laws are available; anyone who wishes a copy can e-mail a request to leavitt.evad@gmail.com. Some of the earliest burials were between 1806-1892. Some lots have been used by families whose descendants still live in Turner.
The active membership is only six people. Membership is for any person interested, any person who bought a lot, or any descendent who has relatives buried at the cemetery. In the past few years, the association has lost officers and active members. Anyone who is interested is welcome to join the association, whose mission is to continue to maintain this historical graveyard.
Association President Lester Quimby has stepped down as caretaker; his work involved the sale of lots, management of the cemetery map, arrangement for burials, spring cleanup and repair of stones. He has been active in this endeavor for almost 50 years, and his service will be a great loss. The association also needs assistance with the general supervision and management of the affairs of the association and someone to serve as vice president. Currently, Secretary Arlene Nason records the minutes of each meeting.
Treasurer Eva Leavitt continues to manage the finances and provides an annual report of the North Turner Cemetery Associations expenses and incomes. The treasury is getting slim, Leavitt noted, and any donation or purchase of lots will help the group continue to provide a respectful looking burial ground for those who are buried there and for those who have plans for this site in the future. The sale of lots would help with the maintenance costs. Traditional lots are $200 each, and cremation lots are $75 each. Donations may be made to 7 Beach St., Turner, ME 04282.
This spring a volunteer provided the spring cleanup; another two placed flags on veterans’ graves. and the contractor, Yard Barber Services of Turner, has been mowing the past several years at a reduced rate.
