French, Spanish Masses slated for Lewiston churches

LEWISTON – A French Mass and bean supper, as well as a Spanish healing service, are scheduled for this month at two city churches.
On Saturday, May 21, a Mass to remember the faith and sacrifice of generations of French Canadians in the area will be said at 4 p.m. at the Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul, followed by a bean supper in the church hall. Both events are open to all.
Sts. Peter and Paul Parish was founded in 1870 to serve the large French Canadian population in the area. The community initially met at a small wooden building on Lincoln Street before the Basilica was built in 1938, standing as an architectural wonder and a testament to the hard work and dedication of the French-Canadian immigrants who ensured its completion.
At 6 p.m. on Friday, May 27, a healing service, presented in Spanish, will be held at Holy Family Church, 607 Sabattus St. All are welcome to participate.
The Rev. Michael Sevigny, director of the Office of Hispanic Ministry in the Diocese of Portland, will preside.
