WINTHROP – The work of local photographer Roland LaVallee is on display at the Winthrop History and Heritage Center, 107 Main St. Some of the many photographs LaVallee took of the blizzard of 1952 for the Kennebec Journal are featured.
The Kennebec Journal reported that thousands were “stranded on the turnpike, train rescues 125 and heavy fall blocks roads,” during the Feb. 18 blizzard.
He was also on the board of the Winthrop branch of Depositor’s Trust, which became Key Bank. The building is now the home of the Winthrop History and Heritage Center.
History Center members are also busy choosing new products for the gift shop and changing out the history displays to the seasonal theme of “Winter in Winthrop.”
Work on getting the center in shape is ongoing since the historical society moved into hits new home a year ago. LED lighting has been installed throughout the Center. WMHS is also cataloging every artifact that has been donated to the society. The database will hold the stories associated with each artifact to be easily shared with the community.
The next planned big project for 2022 will be painting the exterior of the History Center using money from a grant that WMHS received. WMHS is looking for professional painters for this project.
