Androscoggin SWCD erosion, wildlife tracking events coming up

AUBURN – The Androscoggin Valley Soil and Water Conservation District is hosting two events for the region’s residents this month.
Winter Erosion & Sedimentation Control will be from 8 a.m. to noon Thursday, Jan. 13, at 48 Pettengill Park Road. There is a fee for the program.
Cold weather can hinder adequate erosion and sedimentation control for up to half the year, so knowing appropriate treatments and practices for maintaining water quality through proper winter controls can be key to a successful project. This program will explore the options available for performing soil disturbance in the winter as well as highlighting the regulations that contractors need to comply with in the winter.
The class qualifies for four hours of Continuing Education Credit for individuals certified in Erosion Control Practices by Maine DEP.
The family friendly Wildlife Tracking program will be from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Jan. 22, at 202 South River Road, Greene. There is a $10 per-person fee, and $20 per family.
Do we really know what animals are doing when we’re not around? Assistant wildlife biologist Josh Matijas, of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, will lead a walk in which participants will learn how to identify tracks, distinguish behavior and habitat, look at scat and track patterns to uncover the story of local wildlife. This is an outdoor event — dress appropriately for being out in conditions for the allotted time. It is a moderate walk on uneven terrain with a few small hills.
