ELLSWORTH — Programs that assist senior Mainers with transportation were awarded a total $141,000 in grant funding in 2021 through the Maine Charity Foundation Fund and three donor-advised funds at the Maine Community Foundation. Grants will support a range of organizations and projects, including volunteer transportation programs and food delivery services in rural parts of the state.
Area organizations to get grants are:
Veterans Inc., in Lewiston, to expand transportation services for veterans 60 and older who are residents or receive case management services while living in permanent housing: $10,000
Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program, in Brunswick, to support maintenance and expansion of the program that brings food pantries to local housing complexes: $11,500
Community Concepts, to meet the transportation needs of older residents in Androscoggin, Oxford, and Franklin counties, including providing rides for socialization, errands, and appointments: $10,000
Neighbors Driving Neighbors, in the Belgrade Lakes area, to provide free rides by volunteers to older community members and others without access to transportation in Fayette, Mount Vernon, Belgrade, Rome and Vienna: $7,500
SeniorsPlus, to fund transportation to medical appointments and other critical destinations for clients who receive long-term services and supports: $2,000
