VASSALBORO – During the beginning of COVID-19, Chris and Justin Saragosa were temporarily furloughed from their jobs. Their vacations were canceled, and they had a lot of free time.
To fill it, in April 2020, they began fostering cats and kittens. That led to the creation of Kitten Corner, a Facebook page where they share information, events and news from the Humane Society Waterville Area shelter.
“Everything we’ve done has been out of pocket or with the help of the shelter,” Justin said. “Our typical niche is the spicy ferals and cats that other people would usually give up on.”
The name “Kitten Korner” came after they dedicated a corner of their apartment to the fostering effort.
The Saragosas have also taken dogs on doggy day trips and fostered two dogs.
Justin said that they haven’t sought or taken donations, but anyone interested in helping should either donate to their local shelter or email them at thekittenkorner2020@gmail.com.
“We can go from there to set up a pickup/dropoff time,” he said. “We’ll accept anything from blankets, litter, food etc. Fostering has given us a greater insight to how shelters operate and how much they truly rely on the public’s help whether that’s time volunteered, or donating money or supplies.”
