AUGUSTA – Bob Marvinney, a retired state geologist, will lead a geological tour of Howard Hill Historical Park and the surrounding area at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 13.
The event is free and open to the public, and sponsored by Kennebec Land Trust.
Participants will learn about the metamorphic rocks and granite at Howard Hill, which record more than four hundred million years of Earth’s history. Howard Hill rises up behind the Maine State House, and is a 164-acre park owned by the city of Augusta, with a conservation easement held by Kennebec Land Trust. It’s natural features include a cascading stream, steep ravines, large boulders, an expansive ridgeline with sheer cliffs, and diverse wildlife habitat. The property is crisscrossed by an informal network of old carriage roads and woods roads that provide views over the State House and the Kennebec River valley.
Wear comfortable walking shoes. The group will meet at the end of Ganneston Drive. Park alongside the road and be respectful of driveway entrances.
