LEWISTON – The Lewiston Youth Advisory Council is hosting an event for the 2021 holidays — one focusing on giving to others and focusing on Lewiston’s diversity.
The group is joining forces with Museum L-A for “Seasons of Giving,” which will be held from 1:30-4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 19, at the museum, 35 Canal St.
Attendees will learn about the origins, foods and games associated with Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa through interactive activities with LYAC members, who will host informational and interactive displays, including food samples.
Attendees may put their name in a drawing for a gift basket from each of the tables, and there will also be a drawing for four $50 gift cards.
In addition, a world map will be on site with pins for attendees to place as to where they or their families are originally from to visually highlight Lewiston’s diversity. A post-it board will also be available for folks to write what they love about the holidays in Lewiston.
Canned goods and toiletries may be brought to the event for distribution to Safe Voices and other neighbors in need, with the historic Bates Mill bell to be rung at every 10th donation.
“In a community as culturally diverse as Lewiston, I feel it is vital that the children here immerse themselves in knowledge about traditions that differ from their own so that they can appreciate and respect them,” said LYAC Chair Ryleigh Emmert. “The holiday season has presented the LYAC with a grand opportunity to aid this process with a fun and educational event in a partnership with our friends at Museum L-A.”
Museum L-A Executive Director Rachel Ferrante added, “One of our key goals at Museum L-A is to celebrate the history and culture of our area in all of its richness, from 19th century traditions to today. We are thus especially delighted to partner with our friends at LYAC and to share the joy of all of our holidays and the obligations to each other that all of our traditions value. We hope everyone will join us at the Museum this holiday season.”
