LOVELL – Author Lois Lowry will be the special guest of the Friends of the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library on Thursday, Jan. 27.
“A Winter Evening with Lois Lowry” will be presented online at 7 p.m., and is free to all members of CHML Friends, including those who join in anticipation of the event. The deadline to register is Jan. 21, and members will receive complimentary invitations.
Lowry, a Maine resident with deep ties to Bridgton and Lovell, will talk about her life and her writing, answer questions, read from her work and give a preview of what’s coming next.
Lowry is the winner of multiple awards, including Newbery Medals for “Number the Stars: in 1990 and “The Giver” in 1994. The author of more than 40 books for children and young adults, she is considered one of the country’s most important authors in that genre. Her books range from the rollicking Anastasia Krupnik series and the witty Willoughbys to a haunting fictional memoir of her sister’s death.
Lowry’s books call on readers to consider the world deeply, seriously and humorously. She is known for writing brilliantly on difficult subjects. For instance, “Number the Stars” is considered one of the leading children’s novels about the Holocaust. Her most popular book, “The Giver,” has sold more than 12 million copies and was adapted into a play, a musical, an opera and a film.

The Friends of the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library was established in June 2020 to support the library’s mission of service to the community. Memberships begin at $5 for students and $25 for individuals. The group’s primary goals are to supplement the fundraising activities of the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library so that it can fully meet its mission, to address specific needs for support of the library; and to advocate for the library within the community.
