Kennebec Historical Society Dec. 15 topic is presidential visits

AUGUSTA – The Kennebec Historical Society will host Mac Smith at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, at Christ Episcopal Church, 2 Dresden Ave., Gardiner.
Smith will discuss all 20 presidential visits to Maine, concentrating on visits to the Augusta and Gardiner area by James Polk, Ulysses S. Grant and Teddy Roosevelt.
There will also be discussion of the reaction in the state’s capital to the death of President John F. Kennedy.
A Navy veteran of the first Gulf War and former reporter for The Bar Harbor Times, Smith is the author of “Maine’s Hail to the Chief: A history of presidential visits to Maine,” “Mainers on the Titanic” and “Peyton Place Comes Home to Maine: The Making of the Iconic Film.” His fourth book, “Siege at the Statehouse,” is due to be released in May.
