LEWISTON — Jama Mohamed was recently sworn in as Ward 5 city councilor, filling the seat left vacant by Luke Jensen, who recently resigned.
Mohamed will fill the seat through the end of its term in January.
“I want to contribute to the community,” he said as he was sworn into his new role on the steps of Lewiston City Hall Oct. 21 by City Clerk Kathy Montejo.
The City Council selected him to fill the vacancy Oct. 19.
Mohamed is the Sustainable Livelihoods Relief Organization co-founder/chief executive officer and the Maine Immigrant and Refugee Services co-founder/director of family services. He previously was an interpreter/case worker for Trinity Jubilee Center and served on the Lewiston School Committee from 2013-15.
He has also been a member of the Bartlett Mosque Board is cofounder of the Somali Bantu Youth Association. He resides in Lewiston with his wife and children.
