POLAND – The third annual Deputy Dennis P. Sampson 5k Walk/Run will be Sunday, Sept. 19.
The event is held in memory of Androscoggin County Deputy Sheriff Sampson, who died May 5, 2018 while off-duty at his residence in Poland.
Registration begins at 7 a.m. and there is an 8:20 a.m. start. The run/walk is at Poland Spring Inn, 640 Main St.
There is a registration fee, and money raised will be used for a scholarship to a graduating Poland Regional High School student entering the field of first responders (law enforcement, police, fire, rescue and EMS).
Sampson spent a lot of time in schools, and many students also had the opportunity to job shadow with him.
Sampson was born in Lewiston on Oct. 5, 1966, and grew up in Auburn. He was an Eagle Scout and lived the principles he learned in the Scouts his whole life, those who knew him say. He graduated from Edward Little High School in 1985, and was also a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserves.
He was a reserve police officer in Auburn as well as a full-time officer with the Paris Police Department upon graduating from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in 1991. He’d been with the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office since 2005.
