Readfield Historical Society has new book, events scheduled

READFIELD – The Readfield Historical Society is hosting two events in mid-August, and also has announced the release of “Brief Biographies c.1900 pertaining to some residents of Readfield, Maine.”
The 120-page book includes brief biographies of 35 men and their families who resided in, or had familial connections to, Readfield at the turn of the 20th century. The biographies were extracted and compiled from “American Series of Popular Biographies, Maine,” which was published in 1903. Information was added by Readfield historian and author Dale Potter-Clark, who also incorporated photographs of some people profiled, their homes (some still standing) and the four villages in Readfield as they appeared in 1900.
An index of 230 surnames is included of individuals who are mentioned in the book but are not among the full biographies. There is also a list of 215 place names and five pages of advertisements from the 1903 Readfield Register.
The book is available for $12 in the RHS gift shop at 759 Main St. Copies are also available to be mailed for an extra $3 mailing fee.
The society also has two events scheduled in the coming weeks:
At 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13, the society’s annual wine and cheese social will be held at 759 Main St. The event is free to members, and new members can join at the door: $10 annual, $5 for seniors and lifetime $100.
From 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, the society will host a history walk and unveil six new historical signs, for the Readfield Community Library, the Union Meeting House and at the Old Fairgrounds, including an ox-pulling demo made possible by a Maine Bicentennial Grant from the Maine Arts Commission.
