AUBURN — The First Universalist Church of Auburn has awarded its 2021 Rose Window honor to Kitsie and Ned Claxton, of Auburn, whose efforts have made a significant impact on the health and vibrancy of the church.
The recipients are models of Unitarian Universalist principles and have made exceptional contributions to their faith community, a news release from the church said.
Both Kitsie and Ned Claxton are worship associates, “leading beautiful and powerful services for many years.”
Because of Kitsie’s chaplaincy training, she also facilitates funerals and weddings, and provides pastoral care when Rev. Jodi Cohen Hayashida is away. She recently mentored ministerial intern Molly Brewer and, during the pandemic, Kitsie facilitated one of the church’s caring circles.
Ned brings a gentle, grounded presence to church conversations. Ned sings in choir, and he organized the annual all-music music service for several years. As a state senator, Ned brings his UU values to Augusta, asking “How will this impact the most vulnerable?”
They are also financial powerhouses. Kitsie obtained a $200,000 grant from the Veatch foundation to install ADA accessible elevator and bathrooms. Ned has served as stewardship chair and financial secretary, and set up the endowment committee.
Both have taken care of this community in the present and prepared us for the future. Last year’s recipients were Ginny Starbird and Peter Floyd.
