Hebron Historical Society briefed on Arctic explorer book

HEBRON — Author Mary Cowan, as a guest of the Hebron Historical Society, detailed the life of Donald Baxter Macmillan in her book “Captain Mac.”
From 1908 until 1954, Cowan spent nearly 50 years with more than 30 trips exploring the Artic. Growing up near the ocean and orphaned by 12, he forged an adventurous life and even played a vital part in Robert Peary’s North Pole expedition.
In his journeys he also became deeply involved in the cultural understanding of the Eastern Artic natives who accompanied him.
The next presentation will be a combined one with the Minot Historical Society, featuring retired Maine State Trooper Percy Turner. turner will talk about the history of the Maine State Police.
The presentation will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14 at the West Minot Grange Hall, following a 6 p.m. pot luck support. Those attending may bring a dish, and donations are also accepted.
