Belgrade veterans memorial expansion plan changes

BELGRADE — Plans to enlarge the veterans memorial in the village, which includes veterans up to 1972, have been canceled after the committee undertaking the project found out the deed for the memorial doesn’t allow the work.
Checks were returned to those who sent them to support the project. “We want to thank all that pledged money or sent checks,” said Gary Mahler, who headed the effort. “It was a wonderful thing to see folks interested in making that memorial more inclusive.”
The deed that went with the gift of the memorial doesn’t allow the memorial to either be enlarged or diminised. Mahler said the committee will continue to lobby for an upgrade to the grounds around the memorial, a change of lighting, and the possibility of a bench in front of it.
The town also has a memorial at Woodlawn Cemetery, next to the Old Town House, on Cemetery Road, that includes Belgrade veterans from all wars.
