Community Recycle Day was big success for L-A communities

LEWISTON — Community Recycle Day on April 24 helped residents clean up the community, while highlighting the importance of recycling and collaboration of local organizations that offer recycling options to the community, organizers said.
Community Credit Union hosted the event to help community members do their part in celebrating Earth Day. The event included shredding personal documents for identity protection and alternatives to keep household items and tires out of landfills.
Several local organizations joined forces to make the event a success besides Community Credit Union, including Without A Trace Mobile Shredding, SHARECenter and Stratham Tire. The following was recycled as a result of the event:
* The tires collected by Stratham Tire will be sent to a local Maine business and repurposed for engineering projects
* 3,600 pounds of documents were shredded, protecting individuals and businesses in our communities from identity theft
* A truckload of Rescued Reusables were collected for the SHAREcenter which will be re-distributed throughout their membership of schools and non-profits for repurposing
* An estimated $375 in donations (from monetary and a cans and bottles collection) was collected for the SHAREcenter to help continue supporting their mission
“We had a wonderful turnout of volunteers and community members,” said Erin M. Dunn-Kimball, Community Credit Union’s Community Recycle Day coordinator. “The winds calmed and the temperatures peaked — fantastic weather for this event. Our community members, volunteers and vendors made the Community Recycle Day drive-thru event a success. As we continue to navigate life through a pandemic, we are entirely grateful for the helping hands, kind hearts and respect for our safely executed event. We all worked together to recycle, protect personal information and support the missions of our community partners.”
SHAREcenter Director Lisa Rodrigues said, “We were able to rescue thousands of dollars in reusable resources for our schools and non-profits,” She said 100 percent of the proceeds will go to supporting Maine’s environment, education and economy.
“Thank you again to all that participated,” Rodrigues said. “This was a true win, win, win forr our communities.”
As Community Credit Union typically runs a program, Do Your Part, each quarter, COVID-19 has had an impact he credit union’s ability to offer different recycling opportunities this last year, including recycling cellphones and eyeglasses. The credit union will continue to monitor circumstances and provide updates through member communications and on its Facebook page and also periodically holds shredding events within its branches.
