WINTHROP — Protectors of Animal Life Society of Winthrop, a no-kill shelter for cats, has completed an expansion made possible after it received bequests from the late Dr. Robert Martin and Kendra Shaw.
During the expansion, PALS designated space to create an in-house veterinary room to care for its own cats, which were being sent offsite for care.
In early 2020, PALS’s veterinary room at the shelter came to fruition and PALS was able to perform its own vet care for the cats and kittens in its care rather than continuing to use an outside clinic. The veterinary room allows the shelter to perform spays, neuters, vaccinations, FIV/FeLV/Heartworm testing, dental care and more for the cats and kittens in its care.
Having a vet room onsite helps reduce the stress on kitties from traveling for appointments and also helps the shelter reduce its veterinary care expenses. Also, the kitties at PALS get ongoing, consistent vet care, which helps make them more adoptable.
In January, PALS hired Dr. Jennifer Miller and veterinary technician Carrie Paradis as part of its permanent staff.
In February, PALS also began to offer low-cost veterinary care services to its members.
