Groundbreaking held for Lewiston High School addition

LEWISTON — The groundbreaking ceremony for the new Lewiston High School wing was held Sept. 30.
Voters overwhelmingly approved the $13.4 million addition last fall. It was proposed by the Building Expansion and Improvement Committee and a design by Lavallee/Brensinger Architects of Portland. Ledgewood Construction of South Portland, with extensive experience in school construction, is the general contractor on the project.
Expected to be ready for the 2021-22 school year, the renovation/extension will feature a more secure main entrance to the high school, an expanded office suite to more adequately meet student needs; a second elevator for quicker first-responder access to various sections of the school; and inclusive special education classrooms in the mainstream.
Other features will include the performing and visual arts programming moving from basement storage areas to state of the art studios; more community and adult education space; and additional classrooms, so that teachers no longer will need to change venues between classes, thereby being more accessible to pupils throughout the school day.
