Trolleys topic of Oct. 10 Winthrop Historical Society talk

WINTHROP — The Winthrop Historical Society will host trolley expert Frank Smith from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, via Zoom.

Participants will learn about the trolleys, their routes, the beautiful rides along Maranacook Lake and over to Island Park, the kids who took the trolley to school, and the many amusements that lay ahead of such trips.
Smith was born in Howland and graduated from Howland High School. He served in the U.S. Army for three years, then attended USM, majoring in Technical Education. He taught at East Lyme, Conn., for several years before coming to Maine to teach at Winthrop High School in 1970. In 1994 he decided to get a master’s degree at the University of Southern Maine, which he completed in 2001; during this time, he finalized his study of the trolley system. Currently he is retired, living in Wayne, Maine.
