CARRABASSETT VALLEY — Carrabassett Valley Academy hosted the Class of 2020 Graduation on Aug. 1.
The ceremony was a blend of traditions and reflective of today’s circumstances for the 10 graduates and their immediate family, who attended in person, following CDC guidelines, at the Richard Bell Chapel at Sugarloaf Mountain.
Five graduates and their families, as well as faculty, staff, undergraduate students and extended family members, attended simultaneously through Zoom. Freestyle skier Sabrina Shankman, of the Class of 2001, was the speaker.
During the ceremony, the Board of Trustees presented the senior class with the King Cummings Service Award. It’s CVA’s highest honor in both recognition and in deep appreciation. The award is given annually to an individual or individuals within the CVA community who have performed valuable service beyond normal expectations and have made an outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Carrabassett Valley Academy. Just as Cummings showed extraordinary commitment and service to the school, so have each of the graduates. They sacrificed the most and supported their friends, classmates and community through a time never seen before in the history of the school. Those fortunate enough to have known King Cummings and to have witnessed his generosity, caring and commitment to young people can truly appreciate the full meaning of this award. King helped found, fund and direct CVA through its earliest years.
