LEEDS — The first volume of the long awaited anthology of Leeds stories, compiled by the Leeds Historical Society, is hot off the press and ready for sale.
The more than 30 stories range from a poem by Elsie M. Bryant, written in 1901 at the time of the Leeds centennial, to a Civil War letter from Thomas Lindsay, a history of the Leeds Community Church, and a 1937 report from the county’s school nurse.
There’s information about Leeds’ geography as well as about farms in Leeds spanning the 1900s, including the history of places like the Springbrook Golf Club, and the history of Blue Rock Industries and Bancroft & Martin, what it was like to work in Swain’s Mill, the Leeds Corn Shop, hunting bear in the 1850s, ghostly “Peppermint John,” and an account of a possible murder in Leeds. All these and more can be found in “Out of Our Past.”
