TURNER — Plans for Turner area business and the Turner Public Library’s coordinated effort to create an alternate Fourth of July adventure are coming together.
Picnic-to-Go organizers have announced the current list of participating businesses and the raffle prize that one lucky picnicker will win, $100 L.L. Bean gift card, donated for this fundraiser, will be awarded in a raffle drawn from completed picnic trackers submitted to the Turner Public Library after the event being held between Thursday, July 2, and Sunday, July 5.
Businesses already committed to the Picnic-to-Go weekend include Canty Cow Creamery, Ricker Hill Orchards Farm Store, Roebucks Angus Beef, Double ZZ Land and Livestock, Blue Heron Farm, Nezinscot Farm, Greenwoods Orchards store and bakery, and Bear Pond Variety.
Community Credit Union is donating the Picnic-to-Go trackers, known as Picnic Passports. Bear Pond Variety will contribute $1 for every Italian sub sandwich sold, and Greenwood will make a donation for every sour cream pound cake and quart of strawberries combination purchased. If picnickers prefer traditional biscuit-based strawberry shortcakes for their Fourth of July celebrations, Ricker Hill Orchards Farm Store will have a strawberry shortcake kit of biscuits, strawberries and whipping cream, the proceeds of which will be donated to Turner Public Library. Information on all businesses participating in the Picnic Passport will be available July 2.
Picnickers will be able to obtain a Picnic Passport at any of the participating businesses, and when they visit a business, a stamp or sticker will be distributed. Once the passport is filled by picnickers who visit all participating businesses between July 2 and 5, picnickers can turn their passport into the library for a chance to win the $100 gift card.
“There’s been a revival of support for small and local businesses as a result of the economic hardship that followed the COVID-19 shutdown. Getting out to support Turner businesses, which are in turn supporting the vital institution that our public library is, just makes good sense,” said Betsy Bullard, owner of Canty Cow Creamery, donating $1 for any strawberry item purchased, including popsicles, pints and quarts.
