Belgrade to recognize community members in June 14 Village Green ceremony

BELGRADE — The town will honor a number of community volunteers and award recipients at a public ceremony at noon Sunday, June 14, at the Village Green.
The select boards of Belgrade and Rome recently approved a proclamation recognizing the good works of the Belgrade/Rome Special Needs Food Pantry. The proclamation will be presented to the organization’s board members and volunteers.
Additionally, the Belgrade Board of Selectpersons will formally present the Town’s Spirit of America Award to this year’s recipients:
Carol Johnson, who was instrumental in the Village improvement project, and is the president of the Belgrade Lakes Association and as the chair of the Union Church Council.
Lynn and Phyllis Matson, who developed the Belgrade Lakes Village Green and donated it to the town.
Elisabeth “Betty” Wells, who is being honored posthumously for leaving a financial gift in her will for the Belgrade Fire & Rescue Department. The money was used to buy a rescue boat and all-terrain vehicle.
Also recognized will be postal carriers Joe Arsenault and Nick Claudel, who pulled a driver from a crashed tanker truck that was afire near the Belgrade post office in January 2019. The two men have since been awarded the Carnegie Medal for heroism.
