Community Credit Union marks 75 years of community collaboration

AUBURN — As Community Credit Union reflects on 75 years of serving its members and the community it’s important to revisit the early days of collaboration. In February, before the COVID-19 outbreak, Community Credit Union met with city of Auburn and Central Maine Credit Union officials to thank them and recognize the important role they play in Community Credit Union’s history.

Two primary principles that credit unions are founded on are cooperation among cooperatives and concern for community. On May 17, 1962, the Municipal Employees of Auburn Federal Credit Union was formed. Georges Rancourt was given credit for organizing the credit union; Gerard Coloumb was elected as the first president to serve the newly formed credit union that would serve city employees. Rancourt was affiliated with Central Maine Credit Union (formerly St. Croix Credit Union).
Community Credit Union opened in 1945 as St. Pierre Credit Union, formed to serve the parishioners of St. Peter and St. Paul Church. In 1994, Community Credit Union merged with Municipal Employees of Auburn Federal Credit Union. Several members of the Auburn Credit Union Board remained serving on the Community Credit Union Board, including Hugh Keene, who retired from the board in 2014 after 47 years serving credit unions.
In these uncertain times, credit unions have come together in their communities, putting their people helping people philosophy into action with competitive loan rates, financial literacy lessons, increased remote account access, payment arrangements, shared branching and increased donations through the Maine Credit Unions Campaign for Ending Hunger. Credit unions exist to serve their membership and communities and that is exactly what is happening in these tough economic times through cooperation and concern for community.
Community Credit Union has at 144 Pine St., Lewiston; 40 Stanley St., Auburn; and 1025 Auburn Road in Turner.
