Portrait of Turner disc golf champion Landon Brooks

By Will Davis III

When I first heard the name Landon Brooks, he had just signed on as the youngest sponsored player by MVP Disc Sports, after he won his first disc golf World Championship. As a member of Team MVP myself, I was excited about following his journey and loved seeing him build a fan base at such a young age.
In 2018, I had the pleasure of meeting Landon. He had just won his second disc golf World Championship, so I couldn’t wait to see him in action. Let’s just say he lived up to the hype.
Sure, he was an absolute prodigy on the disc golf course, but there was something else about Landon that set him apart from everyone out there. He was playing a round with his parents, Robert and Jesse Brooks, who are also talented disc golfers. Throughout every hole you could hear Landon say “Great shot, Mom!” and “What should I throw here, Dad?”
If Landon made an errant throw, which was very rare, he’d quickly run to his shot and throw again. Not once did he complain or hang his head. Even after a 20-hour drive from Maine to Michigan, he was smiling ear to ear.
Most kids have taken on and given up interest in a plethora of hobbies before they turn 10. Landon is no exception. The difference with Landon: he never gives up anything. He’s taken on basketball, baseball, soccer, snowboarding, and has even won a state championship and New England championship in wrestling.
As a third grader at Turner Elementary School, Landon somehow still manages to excel in class on top of his athletic pursuits. Most recently, he brought home a second place finish in the 18-and-under division at Las Vegas Challenge. Again, not once were there complaints about the long drive back home or hanging his head about second place — just loving life as he takes on new challenges and spending time with his family.
Landon may have more championships, sponsorships, and achievements than most may get the chance to have in a lifetime. However, no matter what age or accomplishments, you can’t help but cheer for someone who has the heart of a champion like Landon does. As he prepares to compete for his third disc golf World Championship in July, I can guarantee that no matter the outcome, he will never stop being a winner.
After the impact he’s made on the first decade, there’s no telling what Landon has in store for his next one — and he’s got fans like me around the world ready to watch and cheer him on.
