CARRABASSETT VALLEY — Geologist Mark Brockmann will discuss archeology at the Carrabassett Valley Public Library on Thursday, March 5.
The tallk, at 4:30 p.m., is free and open to the public.
Brockman will discuss the stone tools used by the native people of the Northeast. Replicas of the tools will be on display, and Brockman will answer questions at the end of the program.
Brockmann earned a masters degree in geology from Miami University, in Oxford, Ohio, and has travelled throughout the Northeast, working as an environmental, geotechnical and educational geologist. In the early 19902, he bought property in Maine along a glacial esker in Chesterville, and built a house in 1995. This is now the location of his library/office/lab, with lithological and mineralogical collections. He also wrote “Indigenous Lithic sources of Northeastern North America,” with Barry Keegan. The book describes 35 lithic sources, with their geology, physical properties, occurrence and uses. Digital photos show outcrops, lithic varieties and Keegan’s lithic replicates. Many of the ancient quarry sites have been covered or destroyed by anthropogenic activities.
