Turner Museum, Historical Association preparing exhibits, activities to commemorate bicentennial

TURNER — Several Turner Museum and Historical Association volunteers are preparing exhibits to commemorate Maine’s 200th anniversary showing “The Way We Were” in 1820 here in Turner.
Turner voters approved statehood for the District of Maine by a count of 151`15. An exhibit, prepared by Linda Poland, will be displayed in the lobby of the Town Office commemorating the vote and include other interesting information about life in Turner before the Civil War. Some artifacts, pictures and documents will be included.
The museum also will be featuring other exhibits. Sharon Bremner’s information will include the different school districts and how they changed or increased over the early 1800’s due to the population growth of the town. This will also include where the districts and schools were located, along with some pictures. Natalie Pilsbury’s exhibit of local industries showing homesteaders developing a single craft or trade into a business such as tanner, blacksmith or harness maker during the time.
Patricia Gilbert is preparing information depicting household food preparation in 1820; Barbara Beedy has been working on maps and stories of the early roads and bridges that helped join the many population areas around town and a special presentation of information about Androscoggin Native Americans.
There will be a program called “Night at the Museum” inviting the public and other historical groups. The date has not yet been confirmed. The museum at 98 Matthews Way in Turner Center is open Tuesday and Thursday of each week from noon to 4 p.m.
