WATERVILLE_ — _Local residents and visitors are invited to enjoy a day of free cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding (bring your own) and other winter activities Saturday, Feb. 22, at Quarry Road Trails 300 Quarry Road. Located just minutes from downtown Waterville and jointly owned by the city and the Departmet of Parks and Recreation, developed in partnersh with Friends of Quarry Road, the 200-plus acre property abuts Messalonskee Stream features more than 10 miles of trails for hiking, biking, skiing and snowshoeing. 207-616-6186 or visit quarryroad.org. The Welcome Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to provide equipment rentals and free snowshoes on loan. Ski and snowshoe trails are open all day throughout the season with lighting on over a mile of trail for night skiing until 9 p.m. Quarry Road Trails’ snowmaking system ensures that the ski trails are covered even in periods of low natural snowfall.
Fat tire bike demos will be available from Mathieu’s Cycle & Fitness. Families can play in the snow and create snow art activities. Explore the snow terrain park, warm up by the bonfire, go on a nature scavenger hunt and enjoy the outdoor activities designed for all to enjoy.
This is the third and final Community Ski Free Day scheduled for the 2019-2020 winter season. These free community events and the Quarry Road Trails are supported through ski pass sales, donations, collaboration with partnering organizations, and contributions from annual sponsors.
