WILTON — The Wilton Blueberry Festival Board of Directors is weighing options following the resignation of Chair Shannon Smith on Jan. 14.
Smith, who has been chair for 30 years, will step down Oct. 15, after the 2020 festival. The festival is always held the first Friday and Saturday of August.
After considerable discussion, the board believes there are three options to entertain moving forward:
Option 1 would have a local volunteer interested in assuming the coordinator reins in order to be introduced and involved in the 2020 planning process of the festival. Additionally, this volunteer would work closely with the current chair and Board of Directors to allow for a seamless transition.
Option 2 would have a local entity or service group to be introduced to the current process and take the reins of organizing the 2021 festival.
Option 3 would have the festival return to its origin as the Blueberry Bazaar presented by the Wilton Congregational Church.
In her role as chair, Smith increased the footprint of the festival, including events like the parade, fireman’s muster, entertainment, crafts and a variety of vendors, which culminate with a fireworks display over Wilson Lake.
