TURNER — The inaugural 2020 Roy Varney Hornet Classic was held on the cross-country trails at Leavitt Area High School Saturday, Jan. 11.
“Thanks to a very large community effort and support with shoveling snow and prepping the trails, the event happened on the trails at Leavitt,” noted coach Dustin Williamson.
The race was renamed this year to honor Varney, a 2019 graduate, who passed away in an accident shortly after graduation.
“He was the Class A Nordic state champion, and it was a great day for skiing and for an event that paid tribute to his accomplishments,” said Williamson.”Roy was a best friend, a role model, an incredible Nordic skier, a passionate competitor, a hard worker, and like a big brother to many on the team. His passion and excitement for the sport of Nordic skiing was unmatched, and renaming this race in his honor was a great way to pay tribute to him. One of his dreams was to have a Nordic and biathlon training facility in Turner, and we are working to make that happen at the Maine Outdoor Wellness Center in North Turner.”
