Oakland boy nabs state karate championship for his division

WATERVILLE — The 2019 S.M.A.R.T. — State Martial Arts Ratings & Totals — karate championships took place Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Alfond Youth Center. Lyall Glasspool of Oakland was named state champion in his division.
According to the website for the national organization, “SMART points are awarded to those competitors (who) place in the top four of their division.” Additionally, at the end of the year, the competitor with the most points in his or her division wins the “Divisional Championship” and the top four competitors with the most points in their divisions are invited to the SMART State Martial Arts Championships. The winner of the event is declared the SMART State Champion.
