AUGUSTA — Fort Western will present an Old Time Christmas open house from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30 as part of the Riverfront Holiday Celebration sponsored by the city of Augusta and the Augusta Downtown Alliance.
Participants may take a ride across the river to Fort Western on a horse-drawn hay wagon from downtown Augusta to experience the sights, sounds and smells of an Old Time Christmas_._ Upon arrival, visitors can warm themselves by an 18th century hearth fire in the south kitchen while sampling holiday refreshments of times past.
Period rooms will be decked with holiday décor and music from a Victor Talking Machine will immerse the senses into days of yore. Children and adults can listen to readings of Clement Moore’s 1823 “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas (An Account of a Visit from Saint Nicholas)” by candlelight and more. Mulled cider will be available for sampling.
A $5 donation is recommended., with proceeds benefitting Fort Western educational programs, the preservation of the fort and the promotion and continued research of history in the Kennebec Valley.
The event ends before the 5 p.m. traditional Christmas tree lighting in Market Square, downtown and fireworks.
