Auburn-Lewiston YMCA girls win championship in fall hoops league

The Auburn-Lewiston YMCA girls’ 4/5th-grade basketball team competed in the Dirigo Fall Basketball League, which fielded more than 100 teams in the girls division ranging from fourth to 12th grades and competing at venues from Saco to Bangor.
With a record of 5-3, the team entered the final round Nov. 2 seeded fourth out of 14 teams in the 4-6 State Division. In the first matchup, the YMCA team beat XL Thunder-Silva 37-21; the team then played BBN-Travon, earning the championship with a 36-27 win.
The “Y Hoops” team is comprised of seven fifth-graders — Alexis Creaser, Chloe LaPrell, Izzy Merrill, Leigha Pelkey and Jenna Shea, all of Auburn, and Chloe and Piper Croteau of Lewiston. Fourth graders are Caisyn Langley of Lewiston and Elizabeth Galway, Auburn.
