CASCO — The town of Casco held a benefit supper and raffle to support Jon and Wanda Vaughn-Carr on Oct. 19 at the Central Fire Station, raising more than $4,500.
I am Jon of Jon and Wanda. My claim to fame is that I moved to Casco, married a woman deeply invested in her community and got sick. I have a rare form of cancer that has been said to be terminal. I am no one’s hero. I never rescued a cat from a tree or saved anyone from a burning building. I’m just a member of a community who, with the support of my teaching family at Edward Little High School in Auburn, just happened to fall into the community that I did.
Part of the supper proceeds donated will go to medical bills that anyone has as a result of any serious illness. The bulk of it, though, will go towards the completion of our labor of love started some seven years ago, our barn.
I promised my wife back in the day that I would build her a barn and then a house. The partially completed barn has sheltered our little moonlight screen printing business.
There was never any urgency on my part. We collected parts, recycled items from the transfer station along with stockpiling stone and brick. I was always mindful not to insist that my friends help too much, as I did not want them to associate my project with, “How much can you help me with it?” This was a self-inflicted project, maybe a little too ambitious for the weekend do-it-yourselfer. I didn’t want to burden others with it.
The unexpected diagnosis and prognosis turned our life a little upside down. We are moving to liquidate the business housed in the barn and re-imagine it as our home. It is at this juncture that several community members jumped in to honor and humble us with this dinner and raffle.
We cannot describe how overwhelmed we are by the love expressed by our community. I hope they see our little barn as it is pictured today and realize as they watch it evolve just how much a part of it they are as theydrive by it. Thank you, our families of Casco and Edward Little.
