Third annual Trash Can Turkey Roast Oct. 19 in Hiram

HIRAM — The Hiram Historical Society wwill host its third annual Trash Can Turkey Roast, prepared by Bald Mountain BBQ of Baldwin, at Hiram Community Center, 14 Historical Ridge, Saturday, Oct. 19 at noon. Roast turkey, pork, baked beans, coleslaw, cornbread are on the menu. 50/50 raffle.
Former students of Mt. Cutler Grammar School will gather at 10:30 a.m. at Hiram Community Center for a “meet and greet” with coffee, donuts and cider, donated by Apple Acres. This will be followed by a program designed to evoke memories of school days. Group photographs will be taken, followed by the announcement of the 50/50 raffle winner.
Great Ossipee Museum of Hiram Historical Society will open at 1 p.m. for touring its collection, including a special exhibit of Hiram schools, and exhibits of Hiram churches, logging on the Saco and Ossipee rivers, and farm equipment. Attendees can view period videos, help to identify students in period photos, and write notes to long time principal and teacher Eleanor Twitchell.
Mt. Cutler School was built in October 1883 to replace a similar three-room school burned in February 1883. The school was closed in October 1978 marking 95 years as a school. The building was turned over to the Hiram Fire Department in 1983 and to the Hiram Historical Society in 2014. It is 136 years old.
