Free ‘Working the Workforce’ seminar Nov. 6 in Lewiston

LEWISTON — The LA Metro Chamber will present “Working the Workforce” in conjunction with the Lewiston Adult Promise Collaborative providing wraparound support for adult learners in the new economy.
The seminar will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, at the LA Metro Chamber, 415 Lisbon St., by Jonathan Henry, vice president of Enrollment Management and Marketing at the Universtiy of Maine Augusta and co-convener of the LeAP Collaborative.
The Lewiston Adult Promise has been funded by a pilot grant from MaineSpark’s Adult Promise initiative. More than 15 organizations in the L/A region — higher education, non-profits, agencies and advocates — convene regularly to improve how we provide wraparound support and interventions to reduce barriers for adults to attain the credential they are seeking. The end goal is to have 60 percent of Maine adults with a credential of value by 2025, which translate to over 5,000 more in Androscoggin County in the next seven years.
In keeping with the goal of Maine Adult Promise to make it easier for adults to obtain their educational goals, the Lewiston Area Adult Promise Collaborative, or LeAP’s, collaboration and work will be focused on four main barriers adult learners must overcome to be successful in attaining a credential of value — access to, and knowledge of, educational and workforce credential programs in the Central Maine region; college readiness and skill development; financial capability/literacy and financial resources; and English as a Second Language training. The group will be developing creative strategies for community outreach to encourage aspiration in the area’s adult population.
Any person interested in supporting an adult seeking to earn a “credential of value” for the new economy, retrain for a new field, or complete a college degree that has been left unfinished is encouraged to attend.
This seminar is free; however, pre-registration is required at www.LAMetroChamber.com. Lunch will not be provided. For questions, call 207-783-2249.
