AUGUSTA — Gov. Janet T. Mills joined Augusta Mayor David Rollins, Augusta city officials and members the Maine Bicentennial Commission Tuesday for the kickoff of the commemoration of Maine’s statehood at a public celebration at Mill Park.
“Augusta will have a lead role in the state bicentennial,” said Rollins. “We have a lot to celebrate. Augusta is becoming more diverse, and this gives us strength. We have new people and new businesses; our downtown is undergoing a resurgence; and we have great cultural and creative energy. Things are happening in Augusta.
Mills spoke at the event and presented the state bicentennial flag to the mayor. “Maine has a proud and storied history, and our bicentennial offers us the opportunity not only to honor it, but to recommit ourselves to the values that shaped us as a state and as a people,” said Mills. “I was honored to join the Bicentennial Commission in launching these commemorative events, and I look forward to continuing to recognize this important milestone for our great state.”
Ahead of Maine’s bicentennial year, the city dedicated 10 newly-planted pine trees on the north end of Mill Park. The William Payson Viles Tricentennial Pine Grove recognizes the Viles and Lund families have made significant contributions to the health and welfare of the city.
“The Viles and Lund families have been integral to Augusta’s growth, vitality and beauty, and this grove is a fitting way to carry forward their legacy into the next century,” noted Rollins.
