Rangeley Lake loon count records 32 adult loons

RANGELEY — Volunteers on both the water and on land participated in the 36th annual Maine Audubon Loon Count on Rangeley Lake July 20. Through a coordinated effort,100 percent of the lake was covered resulting in a total of 32 adult loons counted.
The 17 volunteers who took part in the count included Joani Yankee and Martha Chase, who observed from their lakefront properties; Joan Meerman, who canoed her section; and Dick and Andy Hall, who searched sections along the east end of the lake from their boat.
Covering the western side of the lake, 11 observers, including Andrew Beahm, executive director of Maine Audubon, were aboard the Oquossoc Lady II with Registered Maine Guides Nick Leadley and Kevin Sinnett.
Sinnett invites anyone interested in participating in next year’s loon count on Saturday, July 18, to contact him at rangeleycruises@gmail.com.
