Readfield Historical Society Heritage Days events planned

READFIELD — As a kickoff to Readfield Heritage Days, the Readfield Historical Society will hold a wine and cheese event at their museum, from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9.
The event is for RHS members, both existing and those who join that evening, to enjoy camaraderie with others who have similar interests. An assortment of cheeses, sausages, crackers, pickles and cookies will be served as well as wine and non-alcoholic beverages. A dedication of the new military room will be held at 6 p.m. in honor of Bill and Flo Drake. Flo was RHS president for 13 years with her husband at her side. Accomplishments during her tenure include a two-story wing added to the building, with space where the recently finished Military Room is now housed.
A History Walk, “Readfield Corner before 1827,” will be co-led by Dale Potter-Clark and Bill Adams from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 10. The tour will begin inside the Union Meeting House, 22 Church Road, to learn about the historic building. Then Potter-Clark and Adams will begin transporting participants back in time. From UMH all will proceed on a walking tour of Readfield Corner, when the two historians will point out and share information about some of the people, buildings and businesses that existed there prior to 1827. Surprises are in store as people learn how much — or how little — existed there in that era. Information they have recently unearthed also will be shared. The tour will culminate at noon at the Old Fairgrounds, where food concessions will be set up for Heritage Days.
The RHS building at 759 Main St. will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, when RHS President Bob Harris, will be on duty. Visitors are invited to tour the museum and to view a rotating slide show of vintage photos of Readfield Corner. Potter-Clark and Adams will be at RHS from 1-2 p.m. to answer questions pertaining to the slide show and the morning history walk. Potter-Clark also will sign books she has authored that are available in the RHS gift shop.
The Readfield Historical Society was founded in 1985 in order to preserve the history of Readfield and its people. It is a nonprofit 501 C3 organization. For more information, call 207-377-2299 or email readfieldhistorical@gmail.com
