RANGELEY — A presentation on Antarctica by author and photographer Ed Webster will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, at the Rangeley Public Library, 7 Lake St.
The presentation is free and open to the public.
Webster, who has also climbed Mount Everest, visited Antarctica twice in 2018 as a polar history lecturer on adventure cruise ships for Quark Expeditions. His journeys took him by ship from the world’s southernmost city of Ushuaia, Argentina, more than a dozen times across the notoriously stormy seas of the Drake Passage to the Antarctic Peninsula.
In this new presentation, Webster recounts the historic voyages and eventual discovery of Antarctica by 18th and 19 th century explorers as a prelude to the dramatic and ultimately deadly Race to the South Pole during the first decade of the 20the century by Capt. Robert Scott, Ernest Shackleton and Roald Amundsen.
The pressentation combines original archival photographs taken by the world-famous adventurers as well as contemporary ones taken by Webster.
