LEWISTON — Every Saturday morning for the last few weeks, participants of Museum L-A’s poetry workshop, “Seeing with the Heart’s Ear,” have been writing original poetry inspired by the museum, the mills and the Lewiston-Auburn community’s history. The eight-week workshop, led by guest teaching artist Martin Steingesser, brought together participants over the age of 50 from all walks of life and all ranges of poetic experience and encouraged them to learn new writing methods to serve their consciousness in expressive ways. Now, they are ready to share all that they have learned.
Friends, family, and the general public are invited to attend the poetry reading event from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday, June 8, at the museum, to celebrate the work the participants have accomplished. The evening will feature the workshop’s poets reading their original poems alongside readings by their esteemed teacher and give the public an opportunity to share in their experiences.
As this senior arts program ends, Museum L-A staff have begun the planning process for the next session in the Seeding Vitality Arts in Museums grant program supported by Aroha Philanthropies. Starting this fall, the museum will offer an eight-week paper sculpture workshop for participants over the age of 50. Karen Brooks, a local teaching artist, will guide a group of new artists to create 3D masterpieces using paper, glue, and a blade.
“I continue to find constructing images from paper, adding and arranging elements, [is] a medium filled with joy, surprises, and endless possibilities,” said Brooks.
It will be the second of three senior arts workshops organized by Museum L-A through the spring of 2020. More information about this workshop will be shared on www.museumla.org and the museum’s Facebook page throughout the summer.
