BRIDGTON — The Lake Region elementary schools of Stevens Brook and Songo Locks put on a band and choral concert before a packed Stevens Brook gymnasium on April 10.
The instrumentalists were a mixture of first- and second-year students, each performing selections based on their learned skills.
Listeners were treated to the full gamut from the beginners’ perennial favorite “Hot Cross Buns” to the advanced musicians playing a rousing “Funky Town” by Lipps Inc.
Sarah Foster directed the Songo Locks students, while Asa Furst directed the Stevens Book Band and the chorus. The Songo first year group also played “The Frog Song” and “Michael Finnegan,” followed by the second-year students performing “Big Rock Candy Mountain” and “Boot Scootin’ Barn Dance.”
The combined band played “March Across the Seas.”
Furst directed the Stevens Brook band in playing “What is Love “and “Funky Town,” with its catchy beat and great percussion, garnering extra applause from the parents and friends in the audience. The chorus sang four pieces with an international flavor — “Somewhere Only We Know” by British group Keane; “We Are Family,” “Rhianna’s Umbrella” and “Al Yadil, Yadil, Yadi,” a Palestinian folk song.
