Walk for Autism is April 28 in Winthrop

WINTHROP — The Autism Society of Maine will hold a Walk for Autism fundraising event Sunday, April 28, beginning at noon.
According to the society, one in 59 children are born with autism. The Walk for Autism is a community event showing support for individuals and children living with autism and their families.

April is Autism Awareness Month, and many activities have been planned. The walk will be held at the University of New England in Biddeford and Portland, the University of Maine in Bangor, the Farmington Fairgrounds in Farmington and the Fryeburg Fairgrounds in Fryeburg.
Each walk will have activities, snacks, face painting and local first responders. Getting families involved with their local communities is a big part of the walks; participants meet other families and have the opportunity to be part of a bigger picture. Estimates call for more than 1,200 participants.

The symbol for autism is a puzzle-themed ribbon reflecting the mystery and complexity of autism. The different colors and shapes represent the diversity of the people and families living with this disorder. The brightness of the ribbons signals hope through research and in the increasing awareness of people.
