PORTLAND – Gov.-elect Janet Mills has announced the complete program for her inauguration on Wednesday, Jan. 2, including a musical performance by the Franklin County Fiddlers, a group of musicians from Mt. Blue High School in Farmington, Mills’ hometown.
The inauguration will also feature the reading of an original poem authored by Maine’s former Poet Laureate, Wesley McNair and musical performances by three young new Mainers.
“Maine is an extraordinary state, bristling with gifted and creative people — it is part of what makes us so special,” said Mills. “I am honored to have several of them participating in my inauguration and sharing their talents with the people of Maine. Their skills are a tribute to our great state.”
The schedule of events is:
4:30 p.m.: Doors open 5 p.m.: Pre-inaugural concert including Franklin County Fiddlers, Mt. Blue High School High School, Steven Muise, director; 195th Maine Army National Guard Band, Commander Brady S. Harris.
6 p.m. ceremony: Legislature reconvenes in convention seating, state officials, guests and Mills seated. Presentation of colors and national anthem sung by Alain Igirneza, 15; musical performances by Shy Paca, 11, Natalia Mbadu, 10, and the Franklin County Fiddlers. Poetry reading by McNair, “The Song for the Unsung.”
Invocation by the Rev. Kenneth I. Lewis, Green Memorial AME Zion Church, Portland; greeting from the Wabanaki Tribes of Maine; Rabbi Erica Asch, Temple Beth El, Augusta.
Oath of office administered by Troy Jackson, D-Allagash, president of the Maine Senate. Proclamation by Matthew Dunlap, secretary of state.
7 p.m.: Inaugural address by Mills. Benediction by the Rev. Frank Murray, St. Paul’s of the Apostle, Bangor. Recessional: 195th Maine Army National Guard.
Tickets are required for entry. Members of the public who have not received an invitation in the mail may reserve a ticket at www.janetmills.com/rsvp/public. The website will prompt the ticket-seeker to enter their name, address, and email, and, once completed, the ticket will be available to print in PDF format, emailed to the recipient, and can also be held at will call onsite at the Civic Center. Those unable to reserve a ticket online can call 207-209-4270 to reserve one.
