Choro Louco will perform at UMA Jan. 13

AUGUSTA — Choro Louco will be featured at the University of Maine Augusta Concerts at Jewett series on Sunday, Jan. 13.
The show will be at 2 p.m. at UMA Jewett Auditorium. The snow date is Sunday, Jan. 27.

Based in Portland, Choro Louco is dedicated to the century-old tradition of Brazilian choro music, which is known for beautiful melodies, complex harmonies and syncopated rhythms, combining elements of European folk and classical, ragtime, jazz, Latin, and African music.
The band includes Carl Dimow on flute and guitar, who plays jazz, classical and klezmer music; Nicole Rabata, flute, who has diverse musical interests including Celtic and classical; Joel Eckhaus, who comes from an old time/jazz/pop/vaudeville background and has applied his knowledge to the cavaquinho, Brazil’s version of the ukulele. David Newsam plays seven-string guitar and mandolin, and brings decades of experience as a jazz and classical guitarist. Eric LaPerna exhibits his great hand percussion skills on the pandeiro, the Brazilian tambourine.
